WILENCOTE SIRES ALSO SHOW STRENGTH

by Debbie Gregory

Excellent local support gave Wilencote Hereford a lift in average at the Hereford stud’s annual sale yesterday afternoon.

Peter and Susie Humphreys sold 18 of their Wilencote sires for an average of $3794. This is up from last year when the stud sold 18 for $3194. Eight of the 26 offered were passed in.

The sale was the last of eight back-to-back sales in the region this week — six Angus and two Hereford — and most saw a softening of prices in the later stages of the sale.

Mr Humphreys said it had not been the easiest year to sell a number of bulls but he was confident buyers would be happy with them.

“We keep things pretty simple here. The bulls have to be sound and do the job they need to do.”

He said the Angus-branded product had a flow-on effect for everyone in the beef industry, raising awareness of quality beef, and the industry was looking great going forward.

“If I didn’t see a future, I would not carry on. We are producing animals that will go out and work.” Auctioneer, PGG Wrightson genetic manager Bruce Orr said the Wilencote line-up was strong and he and other stock agents had full confidence in the bulls. “They will go on and ‘do’,” he said.
