WILENCOTE'S 2007 - 78th ANNUAL BULL SALE by Debbie Gregory
The Wilencote sale got off to a roaring start with the first seven bulls selling for an average of $4457. The final average was $3632 for 28 bulls sold. Wilencote's Peter Humphreys was thrilled with the sale that saw only one bull passed in.
Last year, the Wilencote average was $3521 for 23 sold.
At the start of the sale, he did not want to talk about the season but said he was proud of the even line of bulls offered. His aim was to produce easy-fleshing bulls that could go out there and do the job.
Williams and Kettle stud stock auctioneer Neville Clark said the Wilencote cattle had flourished and had |
proven they were drought-resistant. Any commercial farmerable to hold on to cattle through this drought would do well, he said
Numbers of cattle had dwindled badly all along the east coast of the North Island and it was never a better time to get into beef cattle. There would be a shortage of cattle and the demand for protein worldwide was increasing following the Australian drought and the US going into growing bio fuel, he said.
Poututu Station led the charge at Wilencote on Tuesday, buying eight of the sires. Waitangi Terrace Station paid top money of $5200 for the eighth bull in the ring.
