THE Hereford breed has seen easier times but without a doubt it has an important role in the cattle industry, a bigger than usual crowd heard at the Wilencote Hereford annual bull sale.
The stud’s steady annual sale was the last of a week of successful bull sales in the district. Peter and Susie Humphreys finished with an average of $4670 for 24 bulls sold — a nice jump from last year when it made $3794 for 18 sold.
Stud master Peter Humphreys said there was a lot of data available about the benefits of taking the Hereford option for cross breeding.

“When it gets down to what is under the skin — Herefords have a role to play. On that basis we are still relatively positive.”
He was reasonably happy with his young bulls and getting used to the later sale. This week’s sale was the second at the later date.
Along with the warmer weather over this autumn the young bulls had been doing a lot of riding and trying to stop that had been a challenge.
Mr Humphreys said the stud ran a basic breeding operation to produce bulls that were functional with nice expression around muscling.
He also acknowledged contribution to the industry by Toby Hine, who died recently.
He had the ability to judge and advise in many fields in industry and helped immensely over the years. He had a big influence over a lot of us over the years.”
PGG Wrightson auctioneer Bruce Orr said the Wilencote crop of great functional bulls were a credit to the Humphreys. |
